Ruth Florence Verney was Florence Nightingale's god-daughter, the Verney family being closely connected to Nightingale by work, and as noted above, by the marriage of her sister, Parthenope, to Sir Harry Verney. The Verney family known today for their work in maintaining Nightingale's legacy after her death.

Apparently Verney 'loaned out' this copy of LOST COMMANDER, as the letters included thank her for her generosity... one such begins, "Dear Miss Verney, I have kept this book much longer than intended -- for contrary to my intention - I have read it twice. ..."
