"The 23rd United States Colored Troops, also known as the 23rd United States Colored Infantry, played a significant role in the American Civil War. They were organized at Camp Casey, Virginia, beginning November 23, 1863, and served until June 30, 1864. The regiment was part of the Ninth Corps and was involved in several key battles, including the famous battle of Spotsylvania, where they faced General Robert E. Lee's Army. The regiment was composed of free men and ex-slaves from various counties, including Virginia, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, and Caroline, as well as the city of Fredericksburg. They were initially allowed to serve as contrabands but later became soldiers in the Union army. The regiment's service was crucial in bolstering the Union war effort and contributed to the eventual Union victory." [American Battlefield Trust].
