Rockwood was a famous 19th-century celebrity photographer. His New York City studio photographed over 350,000 persons during the course of his career. The Wiki page on Gardner has another image of Dickens [at his desk] published by Gardner; this the first time we've been able to offer Gardner photographs of Dickens [though the image itself probably taken by Gurney].
Uncommon.
