Kolle was an early friend of Dickens, who assisted in Dickens in his wooing of Maria Beadnell. This volume of letters supplements that of the Dickens - Beadnell collection issued earlier by the Bibliophile Society, and as Henry H. Harper states in the introductory matter, "The are a number of causes which cooperate to make this series of letter of unusual interest to reads of Dickens. Noteworthy among its attrative features is the facility with which Mr. Smith has brought out the full significance of every point in it relation to the principal episode, and to a better knowledge of the character and early strugges of the author."
