"The Sisters of Mercy broke ground on Sacramento's first private hospital, Mater Misericordiae (Latin for "Mother of Mercy") in the mid-1890s. The hospital was one of the most modern and best equipped hospitals in California at the time. It operated at 23rd and R streets until 1925." [Sisters of Mercy site].
While the caption states a date of 1895, since the hospital did not open until 1897, we believe the photograph ca 1898 - 1900.
