The Gaiety Theatre, The Strand, London, was where Dickens saw his last play in 1869. This production of The Battle of Life was edited for the stage by Charles Dickens Jr. and starred prominent actors John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906) as Ben Britain, and Ellen Farren (1848-1904) as Clemency Newcombe. The play opened on December 26, 1873.
