Dickens sat for Gurney during his 1868 visit to the States, and this is one of those images. Since the silver gelatin process came on the scene in the 1870s, we posit Gurney issued this, and other Dickens' images, from negatives, utilizing the recently discovered photographic process.

NB. This the largest photograph of the Inimitable that we've ever handled.
