Gissing's classic tale of one who loved books & reading, and was "an instant success when it appeared in January 1903.." [Collie, p. 97].

This edition often mis-identified as the "1st US", no doubt from the publisher statement on the title leaf verso: "First Edition Published in 1903", referring to the earlier Dutton edition, which has "1903" printed on the t.p., and a statement about using the British sheets on the title leaf verso.
