London: Printed by J[ohn]. R[aworth]. for Joseph Hunscott, 1642. 1st edition, "J. R." issue (Wing R-419D). 16 pp. Typographic printer's ornament to t.p. Drill formations, displayed typographically, pp. 6 - 7. 4to: [A] - B4 7-5/8" x 5-3/4". Disbound, with some remnants along spine. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. The title leaf is browned, grubby, stained, with a couple of ink markings, and some faint pencil letters, a small chip to the top fore edge corner. The leaves throughout, are similarly stained, in varying degrees, with some grubbiness to corners, a few scattered ink markings, the occasional crease. The first few leaves are un-numbered and they have been numbered in pencil. B1 has a small hole to the bottom margin [no text affected]. B2 has a portion missing from the top margin, slightly encroaching on page number and text letter. B4v with soiling and a little chipped at top of the leaf. Overall, a Good serviceable copy. Quite rare drill manual for young soldiers, by the Parliamentary soldier, Captain Lieutenant John Raynsford. OCLC records but a single copy in the US, the Huntington; ESTC adds the Folger. RBH shows just one copy coming on the market in the last 50 years, that in 1976.
