Directed by David Lean, the film starred Alec Guinness as Fagin; Rober Newton as Bill Sikes; Kay Walsh as Nancy; Francis L. Sullivan as M. Bumble; "et le petit" John Howard Davies as Oliver.

Entered as one of 10 films into the 9th annual Venice International Film Festival, which was held from 19 August to 4 September 1948. While the Best Film award went to Hamlet starring Lawrence Olivier, Oliver Twist did garner Outstanding Technical Contribution, awarded to John Bryan.
