Initially founded in 1878, under the name Bryan, Brown & Company, the firm became Brown Shoe Company in 1893, growing into one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the US. In 1917, they secured some lucrative military contracts with the United States government, and it is from this era we surmise comes this advertising artifact.
