First published in 1815, and oft subsequently republished [as here], this one of the "best-known and most popular of the early narratives of adventure on the western coast. ... While trading at Nootka Sound, the vessel was seized by natives because the captain had insulted their chief, Maquinna, and all her crew were massacred with the exception of Jewitt and his comrade John Thompson. ... the work gives many particulars concerning the life and habits of the Indians of Vancouver Island, together with a three-page vocabulary and the war-song of the Nootka tribesmen."
