Lester, a prominent Providence attorney, had visited Yosemite Valley the summer of 1872, during which time he met Galen Clark, James Lamon, James Hutchings & John Muir, this latter with whom he discussed, one evening, geological theory. This work a publication of a subsequent talk on Yosemite read before the Rhode Island Historical Society, 17 December 1872.
