USS Coral Sea (CV/CVB/CVA-43), a Midway-class aircraft carrier, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Battle of the Coral Sea; she was commissioned on October 1st, 1947, serving honorably for the next four decades, until her decommissioning in April, 1990.
The cruise documented in the volume took the ship to the Far East, with calls in Hawaii, Australia, Guam, the Philippines, Hong Kong, divers ports in Japan, Okinawa and finally back to her home port of Alameda, California.
