Jeaffreson the author of almost 3 dozen novels, though these only attained 'second tier' standing in Victorian literary circles, and who primarily made his way by, despite being called to the bar , writing articles for divers journals, as well as being an inspector of records and documents for the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts. Of this latter work, he is today thought to have "rendered a real service to historical studies." [ODNB].
