Poor a noted railroad journalist & economist, who wrote much on the economic & social phenomena of the railroad [as well as the displaced canals]. The first edition of this popular 'Manual' appeared in 1868; it continued in publication until 1924. The 'Cost, Earnings' data, which was presented in the Manual through the 1900 edition, "remain among the most valuable source materials on railroad expansion and development.." ever published. [DAB]. For today's scholar, this valuable material is supplemented by the volume's many pages of adverts, which also offer a wealth of information on the US railroad trade of the late 1870s.
