FEATURED BOOK

[California Gold Rush Chapbook].  The ADVENTURES Of MR. TOM PLUMP. Self-wrappers with title in oranamental border, & cut of a rotund Tom in center. Evidently the issue without the hand-colored outer wrappers, of which Overstreet notes "is highly rare, with only one recorded copy possessing it." 8 pp. 35 cuts depicting Tom's adventures in the mine fields. 16mo. 6" x 3-7/8". 1st edition, 2nd printing (Cowan II, p. 882 Kurutz 6; Overstreet, p. 364). Ca 1849 (per Cowan) ca 1851-52 (per Overstreet) ca 1854 (per Kurutz). Japanese paper reinforcement to spine. Usual light foxing. A VG copy.

"The Gold Rush proved to be a gold mine for American Comic artists." This the first of all such efforts, which is termed "Very Rare". [Overstreet, p. 338, 364]. Kurutz comments: a "charming work consist[ing] of a series of satrical cartoons showing a corpulent lad going off to the gold mines..." An indicator of the rarity of this piece is that both Cowan & Kurutz are apparently unaware of the edition's 3 printings that have been documented by Overstreet, as both Cowan & Kurutz describe the 2nd printing as the "First Edition". No copies at auction these last 30 some-odd years.
