"A souvenir of the visit of His Excellency the Ambassador of the United States of America Mr Edward L. Roddan, aboard the R.O.U. "Artigas" in the port of Montevideo, on the 15th of August 1953" [manuscript entry, p. 1].

Roddan (b. 1899) was a non-career appointee to this assignment by President Truman. The ROU "Artigas" was formerly the USS Brostein (DE-189), a destroyer escort-class vessel built in New Jersey, commissioned in 1943. The ship saw much action in the Atlantic as a submarine chaser. After decommissioning, the ship was sold to Uruguay, on May 3, 1952, under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program.

This album comprised of photographs of the Ambassador during his ship's visit, from leaving the Inspector General de Marina's building to his arrival at the ship, meeting with ship's personnel, lunch in the officers' mess, an official send-off from the decks, then back to shore. Roddan was to leave the Uruguanian assignment shortly thereafter, on October 12, 1953.
