Nightingale, Florence [1820 - 1910]. AUTOGRAPH LETTER, Signed. To a Dr. Murdoch. Dated October 29, 1896. [London]: 1896.
2 sheets, with 3 pp of Nightingale's holograph writing in pen. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. 8" x 4-7/8". A very nice, VG+ ALs from this Champion of the Nursing profession, which shows a hint of aging & wear to the extremities. A fully signed letter from Nightingale to an acquaintance ["been a while since you have heard from me"], one Dr Murdoch, written on Nightingale's 10 South Street letterhead, where she lived from 1864 until her death in 1910. Herein Ms Nightingale requests of Dr. Murdoch a favor, to wit, with a parcel of books she is sending to a Mrs Burden in India ["a native married woman- her husband is a native schoolmaster"], she asks Dr Murdoch to include a number of his "invaluable sanitary tracts, as The Way to Health ... Child Birth ... Management of Infants ... Pure Water ... Bowel Complaints ... & any others on Home Sanitary Care that you will kindly select..." Within this 3 page letter, we find examples of Nightingale's enviable personality traits displayed throughout her entire professional life, to wit... concern for those less fortunate, a willingness to actually act in the improvement of society, establishment of a wide network of colleagues, and a denial of self in favor of the greater good. An-in-all, a lovely artifact for those who wish to have a tangible, physical connection to the "The Lady with the Lamp". |
